Music meets Meditation

This performance was in Germany, as I understood. The group is Nirmal Naad, which I already had a post about the band here, and the song is a light bhajan in raag Bhimpalsi, 8 beats rythem in bhajani taal, composed by Prabakhar Dakdhe, haed of the band, Nirmal sangeet Sarita. The song is conveying all the beauties of raag Bhimpalsi, "Komal Dha" in Avaroha and "Shuddha Ni" in a the last part of Stayee. TheSong is concluded with Dhun (repeating the phrase "Kiti varnavi tu ... " in different melodies) which is advised by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (the founder of Sahaja Yoga) to be aaded. More I can add is the lyric which is written by Shri H.P. Salve, younger brother of Shri Mataji.

Where to Start a Bhajan | Amhi Bhi Gadhalo

Honestly talking, I am not the one to advise people where and how to play this type of bhajans. For me, I will just find the notes and play it somewhere, wherever the singer is singing, but as I promised my dear "nmirel" to talk about it; then alright, my kind respect to my listeners:

First and foremost, consider that there are various types of this bhajan. They are not variations, but types and I mean it. So first choose your fave style. Russian Style can be found in audio album "Ambika". Australian Version is also a famous one. What I can play is the old version which is maybe the simplified version. Any way:

-Blogger's idea: Start it from D (it will be D|minor): nice tune, smooth voice; but not power full as such !
-Mr. Ratio's* idea : chords will be played as following; A D G D. Wow! just great, but I can't sing that high, specially the antraas (versus).
-Australin Version : Same place, different melody and tune.
-Ambika : same tune and of course Russian version (which is nice!)

* Mr. Ratio is a Sahaja yogi from Germany, who is proffessional musicion, and he wrote a wonder full book on Sahaj bhajans with the notation and chords. What he offers is absolute as far as the scientific western music is concern.

Nirmal Bhakti | Made in Switzerland !

Nirmal Bhakti ("pure devotion") is a group of Switzerland-based Indian music lovers from different cultures and nationalities who perform Indian devotional songs also called Bhajans. A music group that transcends the physical boundaries of country, nationality, religion or race to emerge into the world of universal peace. Peace through music from a country known for its great saints and seers, India. The group was started as early as 1983, though it came to be known as Nirmal Bhakti in the summer 1998.

It has performed in a lot of cultural events, private and public functions in Geneva and the neighbouring cantons, as well as in France and Italy. The music presented in our programmes is traditional Indian Music, such as classical and light classical pieces, bhajans, abhangs, qawwalis, ghazals, hymns and songs, as well as instrumental pieces (sitar, violin and harmonium).

Our group is traditionally accompanied by the harmonium, violin, pakhawaj, dholki, tabla, jalara (bells), chimta and the guitar. From time to time, we also arrange folk dances such as Dandiya Ras.

This is how "Nirmal Bhakti" group introduces itself, some professional musician from from Switzerland. The only very well known release from the band is an abum caled "Nirma Bhakti", with 8 fabulous track. Here I brought a sample for you to enjoy it;

Where to Start a Bhajan | Swagata agata & Bolo Shiva Shiva Shambu

Well, this is a million dollar question ! where to start a bhajan; but the answer is simple:
it merely depends on your voice. Gents voice is normally 1 or 1.5 tone higher than ladies. But when we are singing a song together, we have to follow the same pitch. I have listed couple of very famous Sahaja Yoga Bhajans here, where to start them and where it normally has been sang by Sahaj artists, which will come in the following posts. I will start from very easy bhajans and will go to more complex ones later.

But for now, lets start from "Swagata agata" or "Hindi 10" :

Best place I have found is "E|minor", but Dr.Arun Apte's argued that it should be started from "F|minor". In case it starts from "E|minor", it will follow by "D|major", "C|major" and "B7".
If you know about the Indian notation; then in the first option "Sa" will be "B", while it will be "C" in the second alternative. Put the tanpura tune as "Pa|Sa|Pa|Sa". Tabla rythem is "Keherwa| 8 beats".
Normally no instrumental will be played in between.

Second bhajan that I wanted to share with you is "Bolo Shiva Shiva Shambu", which is beatuful "Shiva" song. Well, you can start it from "D|major", but Australian supplement suggests "F|major", which will be followed by "D|minor" and optionally "C|major". For the instrumental, the stayee (chorus part) can be played and fits very well. If you are not satisfied, listen to album "Music of Joy" and/or "JAI SHANKARAM (Shiv Puja 2007)"; there you can find amazing instrumentals played by Australian Sahaj artists. It is kind of pop song, so I do not recommend to mix it with Indian classical music, anyhow; tabla or most preferably dholak rhythm has to be "Keherewa| 8 beats".

Nirmal Naad : brief introduction

This performance is done by Russian Sahaja Yogi band, "Nirmal Naad". They are educated in India in the late Shri P.K. Salve Music Academy on Nagpur. Pronunciation of the Indian and Sanskrit words are not perfect, but as in Indian Classical vocal music, bhandish is flexible on words, it seems that mastery on the vocal chords compensates the pronunciation.

Mr. B .Subramanian is blessed with a melodious voice, he sings Khayal, Tarana, Tappa and Bhajans. He was also born in a family of musicians, received intensive training in Hindustani Classical Vocal music from Pt V.U.Rajurkar of Gwalior Gharana.

He has given many music concerts all over India, USA and Italy. He is a top graded artist of All India Radio, he is also a composer and has written and compose many songs. He is a devotee of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi and practices and preaches Sahaja Yoga through music for inner growth.

Pt.Subramanian is a post graduate in music and is working as a lecturer at the prestigious Shri P.K.Salve Kala Pratishthan-Vaitarna, after serving in the government college of music and dance – Secunderabad for more than 20years and in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavans Public School for 7years.

There is a fantastic performance of the most famous bhajan in raag bhairavi, which is done by him. This is my most favorite bhajan ever, so enjoy it !

Ustad Rashid Khan, Indian Vocal

Ustad Rashid Khan (b. Badayun 1966-07-01) is an Indian classical musician in the North Indian Hindustani music tradition. He belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, and is the great grandson of Gharana founder Ustad Inayat Hussain. In a story told in several versions, it appears that Pandit Bhimsen Joshi said at one point, that Rashid Khan was the "assurance for the future of Indian vocal music". He was awarded the Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. [Ref: Wikipedia.org]

He is performing in Noida, India on Friday, March 20th, 2009 in this video and the performance is a bhajan in Raag Charukeshi.

Dr. Arun Apte

Dr. Arun Shridhar Apte, principal and CEO of "Vaitarna Music Academy" promoting his method of Music Therapy. He is internationally an expert in the field of music therapy through spiritual yoga method. A specialist in singing Hindustani classical ragas and semi classical music like Thumari, bhajans, stage music (natya sangeet) Marathi bhavgeet, he has composed and set to music many devotional bandishis and developed new and innovative techniques in Medicinal Indian Vocal Music Therapy.
Born to musically talented parents, it was his mother Late Mrs. Mangala Apte (a disciple of Pt.D.V.Paluskar of Gwalior Gharana) who gave him the classical vocal training. Later on he got a chance to learn from Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki for 10 years.

Ustad Bismillah Khan

“ Music has no caste ”

Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahib (March 21, 1916 – August 21, 2006) was an Indian shehnai maestro. He was the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (in 2001), the highest civilian honour in India.

Bismillah Khan was perhaps single handedly responsible for making the shehnai a famous classical instrument. He brought the shehnai to the center stage of Indian music with his concert in the Calcutta All India Music Conference in 1937. He was credited with having almost monopoly over the instrument as he and the shehnai are almost synonyms.

Khan is one of the finest musicians in post-independent Indian Classical music and one of the best examples of Hindu-Muslim unity in India and had played shenai to audience across the world.He was known to be devoted to his art form that he refered to shehnai as his begun, wife in urdu, after his wife passed away. On his death, as an honour, his shehnai was also buried along with him.He was known for his vision of spreading peace and love through music.

Qawwali (Urdu/Persian/Pashto/Sindhi: قوٌالی; Punjabi/Saraiki: ਕ਼ੱਵਾਲੀ, قوٌالی; Brajbhasha/Hindi: क़व्वाली; Bangla: কাওয়ালী) is a form of Sufi devotional music popular in South Asia, particularly in areas with a historically strong Muslim presence, such as southern Pakistan, and parts of North India. The style is rare, though not entirely absent, in North and West Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Kashmir. It's a vibrant musical tradition that stretches back more than 700 years. Often listeners, and even artists themselves, are transported to a state of wajad, a trance-like state where they feel at one with God, generally considered to be the height of spiritual ecstasy in Sufism, and the ultimate goal of the practice. Here is one of the most famous qawwali's sanged by great sufi saint "Hazrat Amir Khosro". This Qawwali song is famously known for its effect on the heart and mind of its listeners. Qawwali has a certain quality that often brings spiritual rupture. The psycho-spiritual effect these sufi qawwalis bring are unparalleled. This particular Qawwali often throws people into ecstasy and can be even witnessed in present days at any Qawwali gatherings. The performance that can be found here is from great Qawwal, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, set to tune in raag "Yaman Kalyan".

International Music at United Nations

The Heavenly River

Formed in 1998, The Heavenly river instrumental group took part in a number of Ukrainian jazz and other festivals as well as international festivals of spiritual music held in Italy, Greece and Russia (namely in Moscow), and participated in various concerts. They have regularly played at the musical clubs of Kyiv, were guests of a 'Resheto' musical TV programme on TET Channel (Kyiv) where they gave a performance and an interview, contributed to the 'Puls asfalta ' ('Pulse of asphalt') project of the TV company "Ulichnoe televidenie" ('Street TV').
The year 2001 saw their debut album, The Light. The musicians put the main light on the state of harmony and unity with the Nature, as well as Spiritual Enlightment. The music played by The Heavenly river can be defined as extra-style oriental music closed to New Age (World Music) and distinguishingly blends elements of ethno-jazz based on the rhythmical foundation of Indian classical music (tal) with Slav's folk melodics and jazz harmony and improvisation.
The artists' quest resulted in somewhat a fusion of musical styles and cultural traditions of the East and the West that gives space for the seeking for the original form and sound of a composition. Their music gives auspiciousness and brings positive energy and it is not as much a musical experience as rather that of Spirit. That experience they gain from the spiritual practice Sahaja Yoga.

Ashwini Bhide Deshpande

"Ashwini Bhide Deshpande" performs the touching and beautiful bhajan "Jay Ganesh" in raag Charukeshi. She is talented Indian vocal singer which has many beautiful compositions. The Harmonium and Swarmandal are also used in Bhajan which are just more background voice, as it is in most of Indian calssical music performances. So, Enjoy it !

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Raag Malkauns on Sarod

It is a very beautiful composition and performance of raag Malkauns from great sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan with his sons Ayaan and Amaan Ali Khan in Italy, 1995.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has received the three national Padma Awards: Padma Shri in 1975, Padma Bhushan in 1991, and Padma Vibhushan in 2001, and was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989. He was awarded the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in 2004 and on April 8, 2007, he was honoured with the Key to the City award by Kathy Taylor Mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma state, for his long-standing contribution to the Indian Classical Music. Houston and Nashville has conferred him honorary citizenship in 1997. Massachusetts has declared April 20 as the 'Amjad Ali Khan Day' in 1984. Tulsa is the third US city to confer honorary citizenship to him.

About Avaneedra Sheolikar

Born in 1969 in a well-reputed family of musicians, Avaneendra started his initial training at the age of five with his father Pt. Sudhakar Sheolikar, and then under an illustrious master of sitar - Pt. Bimalendu Mukherjee. As a result of his Guru’s brilliant guidance he has developed a complete mastery over the instrument. The special feature of his performance is the disciplined development of the ragas based on melodious and rhythmical style. The depth of feeling and emotion he expresses through his music is note - worthy. He has participated in a number of music conferences in India and abroad performing in Germany, Italy, Portugal and Russia. He received numerous awards and honours in most prestigious musical competitions. Currently, he is working at All India Radio in Nagpur.

About Sandesh Popatkar

Born in 1967 he belongs to a family of musical tradition. His father and first teacher Late Pt. Shankarrao Popatkar was renowned tabla artist of India and had played in national programs of music in All India Radio. At present he is under the musical guidance of Pt. Gopalrao Wadegaonkar. In 1986 he received the prestigious Tal Mani Award and one year later he started working at All India Radio in Nagpur. In 1988 he started performing abroad as a solo artist as well as an accompanist of all forms of indian music (vocal, instrumental and dance) in England, Switzerland, Turkey, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland and Portugal.

Simona Neagu is from Romania, and the music that is performed here is called as "Bhajan". A "Bhajan" is a type of Hindu devotional song, often simple, lyrical and expressing love for the Divine. The music is sometimes based on classical ragas and talas.
Bhajans by Kabir, Mirabai, Surdas, Tulsidas and a few others are considered to be classic. The language of their works is influenced by several of the dialects of Hindi. They are widely enjoyed even among those who do not speak Hindi.

There is a deep subtle connection between the Indian and Spanish music. This was the starting point for a fusion music group "India Lucia". Beautiful music conveying the waves of Divine Love gives us lots of Joy hearing this fantastic music.
The album expresses both the human and musical fusion of these cultures, which could have had a common ancestor. Improvisation and rhythm are the common elements in both styles and are essential to the continued existence of this music. The recordings were made between 1999 and 2004 mostly in India and Spain. Many great artists from the two continents performed. This album is the result of the years of work, which for the first time demonstrates the common elements of flamenco and its Indian roots fused into one art form.
This album was distinguished with the 1st prize “Best Album of the Year 2005″ Wirtualne Gesle and 2nd music critics’ prize at the New Tradition competition for the “Folk Phonogram of 2005″ award.
